Agia Roumeli

This small town is located 40 kilometres south of Chania. A very small resort with only few permanent residents, built next to a great beach with crystal clear waters. Its modern name comes from the church of Agia Roumeli which is built on the ruins of the older, Roman temple of Roumina. It is believed that at the site of the present village was once the ancient city of Taras. As proven by the excavations, the city of Taras was of great economic importance for the area, cutting its own gold coins. At the exit of the Samaria Gorge stood the temple of Tarsios Artemis. An important religious center in the antiquity.

Today you will find the little church of 'Panagia' (the holy mother), exhibiting interesting mosaics from the 15th century. During the summer season, lots of dayhiking visitors come to Agia Roumeli, as the village is located approx. 1 mile from the exit of the famous Samaria Gorge.
