Der Gingilos- Wächter der Samariaschlucht

In Xyloskalo, right next to the entrance to the famous Gorge of Samaria, starts the ascent towards the summit of Mt. Gingilos. (2080 m). This wild, rocklike Mountain offers the experienced hiker unforgettable views and impressions. In case of rain, hundreds of water cascades instantly start running down the flanks. With sunshine, the views are spectacular. Stoney paths lead higher and higher up the mountain, the theatrical perspective changing with every curve.

You can admire Rock arches, wind bent Cypresses in alpine environment. And as you reach the Saddle of Linoseli (1800m)you can see the Cretan Sea to the north, and the Libyan Sea south of you. From here it is about another hour to the summit. Some passages involve a little bit of climbing and require secure footing. But the summit rewards all efforts with breathtaking panoramas all around. From here you can overview most of the great White Mountains. To get back to Xyloskalo you descend the same way as you came up.

Kallergi Refuge

In combination with Mt Gingilos or Samaria Gorge, or for more extensive hiking in the White Mountains, the Kallergi Refuge is the ideal spot to start from. This comfortable Alpine Hut, owned by EOS, the Xania Section of the Greek Mountaneering Club, is situated at an altitude of 1680m. The hut is being managed by a former ASI Mountainguide, Mr Josef Schwemmberger, for more than 25 years now. The food is good, the beds are warm! Allow 1hr 20min from Xyloskalo to walk up to Kallergi.
