Discover Crete on a bicycle

KTravel offers bicycle programs for all levels, except for beginners who can only do flats. Since the island is hilly near the coast and has alpine mountains further inland, it is not possible to find enough flats for the absolute easy level.

We offer programs where the groups are based in one village and undertake beautiful bike tours on quiet, tarmac roads. For example, a group can stay 1 week in the north and another week in the south, exploring the areas by bike on daily tours from 35 to 60 km.

KTravel also offers trekking tours by bicycle. Groups stay in various pensions and small hotels whilst covering the distances in between during the day on a bike.
We even have a beautiful but demanding biking program right through the “White Mountains” which suits advanced levels of biking.

All bicycle tours can be made as strenuous as your clients require. Even professional teams can be trained easily on the isle of Crete!

On this first day we offer a light tour of some 30 km. Only moderate differences in altitude but many interesting points to visit.
On this peninsula 'Akrotiri' we find the old monasteries of Agia Triada und Gouverneto. Both are only open to public until 13:00 hrs, which can be done easily.
Please do remember  the dress code and to behave respectfully inside the monateries. If stated, please do not take pictures.
From the second monastery Gouverneto we take a well marked path down into a small gorge. Down at the bottom, just above the riverbed, we can find the ruins of the former monastery of “Katholico”
This monastery was given up and deserted because of too many violent attacks from the waterside by the Turks, plundering and killing! “Katholiko“ was situated next to a former river. The riverbed is still visable and leads within a couple of hundred meters to the sea.
On the descent into the gorge one passes directly by the 'bearcave' It is marked by a small memorial shrine. The name 'Bearcave' comes from a huge Stale-akmite in the middle of the cave, which resembles strongly a sitting bear.
Just before the ruins of Katholiko there is another, smaller cave in which an Eremite 'holy Ioannis' is said to have lived. He was shot by a hunter who mistook him for an animal because of his clothing made of hides.
The walk down to 'Katholiko' and back up again takes about 1 hr. If you walk the riverbed to the sea and back it is another hour.
The graveyard of Eleftherios Venizelos is almost the end of the tour. Venezelos was the first Cretan Prime Minister of Greece. A famous politician, born in 'Mournies', just outside of Xania.
From this location the views over the city and the “old Venetian Harbour” are spectacular.
