Almyrida
Almyrida was formerly a tiny fishing village with a mere 15 inhabitants during the Winter which, during the last few years, has grown into a vibrant and attractive tourist resort. Holiday makers are drawn here because of its beautiful location in a small bay with Karga, a small island which is a paradise for fishing and a haven for birds, crystal clear water and sandy beaches where children can safely play.
The tourist infrastructure will appeal all kind of visitor. The holiday maker will find surfboards, sailingboats and katamarans for rent and a sailing school. The beachside restaurants are the best in the region and are famous for their excellent food and fresh fish and there are also cafes and nightlife-bars, supermarkets, and a variety of interesting shops. The area is a perfect centre for cyclers and walkers, both evening strollers and serious ramblers, with paths to neighbouring villages and into the hinterland.
Historically Almyrida is most interesting. The area was once a colony of the ancient Finikes civilisation, nearby the deserted village of Agios Vasilius carries memories of a long departed community in its stones. Entering the village from Kalyves on the left hand side is a large fence protecting a magnificent mosaic floor. In 1973 while digging the foundations of a new family house, the builder found the remains of a Byzantine church dating back to the 5th/6th Century with graves nearby of priests and bishops of the time containing 3 jars for water, wine and for the tears of morning relatives and friends.
