Chania

...is the capital of the municipality of West Crete, also called Chania. Approx. 60.000 people live in this historical jewel of a city, built on the location of one of the first and oldest villages on the island: Kydonia. The fortification of the city began during the Venetian period in 1252. Chania was the first Cretan city conquered by the Turks in 1654. When the city finally regained freedom in 1898, it became the capital of the new independent isle of Crete.
Today it is still easy to tell the new from the old. Traditional houses and modern buildings are found side by side. Amongst the buildings around the old Harbor, one can discover the ancient structures of the Venetian and Turkish periods, along with modern architecture.
Many monuments, streets and squares testify of the glorious and moving history of the city. In Chania one finds many memorials of Eleftherios Venizelos, the charismatic Cretan politician who became Crete’s first Prime Minister of Greece. Although he was born in the village of Mournes, Mr. Venizelos spent a great part of his life in Chania.
A visit to Halepa and its mansions, the church of Maria Magdalena, the archeological site of Kydonia at the harbor castle, is very much worthwhile. Also the Cathedral, Town Hall and the Market Hall are very interesting spots in Chania. Next to the old Venetian harbor you will also find the archeological and the nautical museum.
